Frequently Asked Questions

What is meant by pressure ulcers?

A pressure ulcer is a bedsore, meaning a localized injury to the skin and/or the underlying tissue. These injuries can be caused by prolonged lying down. Certain areas of the body are particularly susceptible to the development of a pressure ulcer.

What are shear forces?

Shear forces are mechanical forces that occur when different tissue layers of the body shift against each other. In the context of pressure ulcers (bedsores), this means that, for example, the upper layer of skin adheres to a surface (such as a bed sheet), while the underlying tissue layers – due to movement or gravity – move in another direction. This causes displacement within the tissue. The Lascara® fitted sheet ensures effective moisture transport, reduces sweating, and prevents the skin from being "held in place" by the contact surface (the sheet).

How can shear forces be avoided?

Shear forces arise when the skin and the underlying tissue shift against each other, for example during repositioning or when patients slide down in bed. These forces can significantly promote the development of pressure ulcers. Pulling a patient across a sheet while repositioning should be avoided in order to prevent the shifting of skin layers. The use of a coated and more glidable surface, such as the Lascara® fitted sheet, minimizes the risk of pressure ulcers.

How can the Lascara® fitted sheet be cleaned?
